Festival and retreat season is here! Some are held over long weekends, and some are weeklong intensives. I started out wanting to give a little short list of what to bring in your dance bag to survive a day (or days) of workshops, performing, watching performances, and shopping. I quickly realized I needed to tap into the vast experience of the experts (aka, my belly dancer buddies) to compile a well-rounded list of things we wish we knew when we attended our first festival.
I took my first ballet class when I was four years old. At that time, the big draw for me to keep coming back were the tutus and pointe shoes and that someday I could wear them. I don’t remember asking my mom for classes but I’m so grateful that even though we were pretty poor, I remember always being in dance classes. I became obsessed with ballet around nine years old and read every book on the subject I could get my hands on at the library.
